What you need to know before renting a self-storage unit

The Federation of European Self Storage Associations (FEDESSA) has defined the standards that a self-storage facility must meet to ensure the integrity of goods and trust in the selected business. The aforementioned specifications concern the construction, organization, and operation of a self-storage unit, and are as follows:

  • It should have a clearly defined perimeter of security outside the building where it is housed.
  • It should have a single controlled main access point.
  • It should allow entry exclusively to those who have an electronic access code (access control).
  • It should be clean, with controlled dry atmosphere without humidity.
  • It should be equipped with a CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) system to monitor the perimeter of the facility, the entrance, and internal corridors, with the capability to record for at least 14 days.
  • It should comply with the current fire department regulations, following a relevant study on fire detection and fire protection.
  • It should have an installed and operational alarm system.
  • It should have a customer reception area.
  • It should have equipment for transporting items to facilitate customers.
  • It should ensure that each customer has exclusive access to their individual storage unit.
  • The company should have in place a liability insurance policy.
  • There should be a certificate of pest control disinfection for the space.
  • The self-storage company should accept interbank payment methods for rental payments.
  • The rental contract between the company and the client should be drafted and submitted to the tax authority (taxisnet).
