- Procure the appropriate packaging materials in sufficient quantity, such as cardboard boxes in suitable sizes and durability (e.g., 5-ply), adhesive tapes, plastic with protective bubble wrap, etc.
- Categorize your items. Begin by separating the items for storage by type, such as books, kitchenware, etc.
- Use the appropriate cardboard boxes in terms of size and durability. Depending on their content (weight, fragility, shape of items to be packaged), the cardboard boxes should be sturdy and appropriately sized to ensure smooth transportation. Place heavy items in sturdy (5-ply) boxes, preferably of the smallest possible size.
- Use appropriate protective wrapping materials. Fragile items, such as glassware and ceramics, require additional protection and wrapping with plastic bubble wrap or corrugated cardboard or foam.
- Follow the correct packing sequence. First, pack the heavy items at the bottom of each box, then place the lighter items on top of them, being careful to avoid large gaps between them that could allow them to shift.
- Seal the boxes. Using adhesive tape to ensure both ease of transportation and stacking in the self–storage, as well as the integrity of their contents.
- Number the boxes using labels or an indelible marker. By following this method and using the moving checklist you have prepared, you will be able to quickly identify the contents of each box or individual item.
